Level 2 chargers, load calculations and permits. Half of Portland homes need a panel assessment first, and we will tell you before you buy the charger.

Most people buy the charger first and discover the problem afterwards. A Level 2 charger draws 40 to 60 amps. A 100-amp panel already running a dryer, a range and air conditioning frequently cannot take it without a load calculation, and sometimes not at all.

Signs Your Panel Needs Attention
Some of these are inconvenient. Two of them are fire risks. If you have the last one, stop reading and call an electrician tonight.
- Breakers that trip repeatedlyThe breaker is doing its job. The circuit is overloaded or faulted, and resetting it repeatedly is not a fix.
- Federal Pacific or Zinsco panelBoth have documented failure-to-trip histories. Many insurers will not cover a home with one. Replacement is not optional.
- Warm outlets or discoloured faceplatesHeat means resistance, and resistance means a connection is failing behind the wall.
- Burning smell with no sourceTurn the circuit off at the panel and call immediately. This is the one that does not wait until morning.
