How much does an SEO audit cost by type?
“SEO audit” is not a standard product. These five versions share a name and almost nothing else.
Free SEO audit (automated tools)
$0A scanner checks a list of rules and produces a score. Useful for spotting obvious breakage, but it cannot tell you which problems matter for your business, or what to do first. Many free audits exist mainly to start a sales conversation.
Good for: a quick health check. Ours is the free SEO checker.
Basic SEO audit price: $100 to $500
$100 to $500Often a tool report with light commentary. Quality varies enormously: some are thoughtful reviews by a freelancer, others are automated output with a logo on top.
Ask: did a person review every finding, and is it ranked by impact?
Professional SEO audit cost: $500 to $5,000
$500 to $5,000A manual review of technical health, on-page content, competitors, backlinks and local presence, with a prioritised plan. This is the range most small and mid-sized businesses should be comparing.
Good for: businesses that want a plan they can act on.
Technical SEO audit price: $3,000 to $8,000
$3,000 to $8,000Deep crawl analysis, rendering, indexing, site architecture and performance, typically for large or complex sites. Small business sites rarely need a standalone technical audit at this price; the technical layer is part of a full audit.
Good for: large sites, migrations, and ecommerce catalogues.
Enterprise SEO audit cost: $10,000 and up
$10,000 to $18,000+Thousands of pages, multiple markets or languages, and a team behind the analysis. Priced on scale and stakeholder time as much as on findings.
Good for: large organisations and international sites.
What affects the cost of an SEO audit?
- The size of your site. A 20-page local site and a 5,000-page catalogue are different jobs. Size is the fairest way to price an audit.
- Depth. A rules-based scan, a technical-only review and a full audit covering content, competitors, links and local presence cost very different amounts.
- Who does the work. A senior specialist, a junior analyst, or software.
- Overheads. Sales teams, account managers and city-centre offices are part of what an agency audit pays for.
- Tools. Professional crawlers and backlink databases cost hundreds of dollars a month, spread across clients.
- Speed. Rush delivery usually costs extra.

Why our SEO audit costs less than most, and what you still get
If professional audits commonly cost $500 to $5,000, a $295 audit deserves an explanation. Here it is, plainly.
1. There is no agency to pay for
No sales team, no account managers, no city-centre office. The person who audits your site is the person you talk to. In an agency audit, a large share of the fee covers those layers rather than the analysis itself.
2. You pay for the size of your site, not the size of a quote
A small local business with a 20-page site should not pay the same as an ecommerce store with thousands of pages. Pricing by page count means most small businesses fall into the $295 tier, and nobody pays for scope they do not have.
3. The audit is where we start, not where we earn
We price the audit as the first step toward ongoing work, not as the main product. It is priced to make starting easy and low-risk: if you move to a retainer within 30 days, the full fee is credited toward your first month. If you do not, you keep the plan and owe nothing more.
4. Efficient process, not shortcuts
We have built our own checking process and tools, so the repetitive parts are fast. The judgement is not automated: every finding is reviewed, ranked and explained by a person, on video.
What you get for $295, compared
Straight comparison, including where an agency audit offers more.
| Volt Audit | Free automated audit | Typical agency audit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $295 to $850, by site size | $0 | $500 to $5,000+ |
| Done by a person | Yes, a senior specialist | No, software | Yes, often a junior analyst |
| Ranked by business impact | Yes | Rarely | Usually |
| Video walkthrough of every finding | Yes | No | Sometimes |
| Competitor gap analysis | Top three competitors | No | Usually |
| AI search visibility | Included | No | Varies |
| Credited toward ongoing work | Yes, within 30 days | n/a | Sometimes |
| A team, workshops and meetings in person | No, one specialist, remote | No | Often |
The honest trade-off: if you need workshops with your team, a large multi-market site reviewed by several people, or an audit presented in your office, an agency audit is worth its higher price. If you need a clear, senior, prioritised answer to what is holding your site back, you do not need to pay for the layers around it.
Is a cheap SEO audit a red flag?
Often, yes. A very low price usually means software output with little human review. But price alone does not tell you. These five checks do:
- Who does it? A named person you can speak to, or “our team”?
- Is it ranked? A list of 200 issues is not a plan. A good audit tells you which five matter most.
- Is it explained? A walkthrough, call or video, not just a PDF.
- Does it cover the whole picture? Technical, content, competitors, links, local presence and AI search.
- Can you test the provider first? A free tool or sample shows how they think before you pay.
We pass all five, and you can test our thinking first with the free SEO checker before spending anything.
Is an SEO audit worth the cost?
For most businesses that get customers from search, yes, as long as you act on it. An audit you never implement is an expense. One that shows you the three changes holding your site back can be worth many times its cost; for many local businesses a single extra customer covers it. That is also why ours is credited toward ongoing work: the value is in what happens after the audit.
