SEO for Plumbers: Win the Call Before the Water Stops

Nobody researches plumbers. They search once, panicking, and call one of the first three results. Everything in plumbing SEO comes down to being in that box at that moment.

Quick Answer

Plumbing SEO is won in the map pack, not on your homepage. The work: a fully optimized Google Business Profile, a page per service per city, honest cost and repair-or-replace content for the non-emergency searches worth more money, and a site fast enough to convert someone standing in an inch of water.

The opportunity, in numbers

Local search is not a marketing channel for plumbers, it is the entire front door. The published research is consistent on this:

46%of all Google searches carry local intent
76%of near-me searchers contact or visit a business within 24 hours
93%of local-intent queries show the 3-result map pack at the top
58%of local businesses still do not optimize for local search

Figures compiled from Google and BrightLocal research as reported in 2026 local search statistics roundups. Percentages vary a few points between studies; the direction does not.

Read the last two together and the opportunity is obvious. The map pack decides nearly every local query, and well over half your competitors have not seriously optimized for it. That gap is the entire business case, and it closes a little more every year.

What it costs to do nothing

Invisibility does not feel expensive because you never see the calls you did not get. Put conservative numbers on it and the silence gets loud. Adjust these to your own market in the free ROI calculator:

The cost of staying invisible
Emergency plumbing searches in a mid-size metro, monthly1,000 – 3,000
Share of clicks going to the top 3 map resultsthe large majority
If you capture just 20 extra calls a monthat $400 average ticket
Revenue you are currently leaving on the table$8,000 per month

That is before repipes, sewer lines and water heater replacements, which are the jobs that actually build a plumbing business. Twenty calls a month is a modest assumption in any metro with real search volume, and it is roughly nine times the cost of the Growth retainer.

What plumbing customers actually search

Plumbing splits sharply between panic and planning, and the planning searches are worth far more per job.

emergency plumber near me open nowemergency burst pipe what to doemergency water heater leakingplanned water heater replacement costplanned repipe house costplanned tankless vs tank water heaterplanned sewer line replacement cost

Almost every plumbing website targets the panic searches and ignores the planning ones. That is backwards economically: a homeowner researching repipe costs is weeks from a five-figure job, and nobody is competing for their attention.

The emergency call pays today. The homeowner researching a repipe pays for the quarter.

Where plumbing websites lose the call

Half-configured Google Business Profile

Wrong categories, missing services, no service areas, stale hours. The map pack decides the majority of local queries and most emergency callers never leave it. This is the first thing I fix, under local SEO services.

No phone number visible without scrolling

Someone watching water spread across a floor will not hunt for your contact page. Click-to-call must be immediate on mobile, and the page must load before their patience does.

Thin review profile

Consumers overwhelmingly read reviews before choosing a local business, and a large share will not consider anything under four stars. Reviews are both a ranking factor and the deciding factor, yet most plumbers request them inconsistently or not at all.

One page for every service and every town

Drain cleaning, water heaters, repipes and sewer work are different searches with different values. Lumping them together, then listing twelve towns on one page, ranks for none of it.

What actually moves a plumbing company

Own the map pack in every town you serve
Correct categories and services, real service areas, emergency hours set properly, and a review request built into every completed job so volume compounds instead of stalling.
Separate service pages, per city
One page per service per area, each genuinely different: local pipe materials and housing age, water hardness, common failures in that housing stock.
Publish the cost content competitors avoid
Water heater, repipe and sewer line cost ranges, plus honest repair-or-replace guidance. These pages rank easily and pre-sell the largest jobs you do.
Make the site instant on mobile
Emergency traffic is mobile and impatient, and slow pages lose visitors before they render. Handled under technical SEO services.
Get cited in AI answers
A growing share of consumers now ask AI assistants for local recommendations. Being the plumber those tools name is a real channel now, covered under AI search optimization.

Should you do this yourself?

You can, and the full method is free in my SEO audit checklist. The obstacle is not difficulty, it is that plumbing days end late and this work takes 15 to 20 focused hours a month, every month. The version that gets done in bursts between callouts produces nothing, which is how most plumbers conclude SEO does not work.

See it, do not just read about it
This is what a plumbing company website could look like.
