What SEO costs in Cheltenham, and what two free months really cost
We pulled the published rates from SEO providers serving Cheltenham and put them side by side, in pounds. Then we look at an offer that sounds like a discount and is really a trade: free months in exchange for a year-long contract.
Published September 2026 · Based on publicly listed pricing from providers serving Cheltenham and Gloucestershire
The short answer
Published prices from providers serving Cheltenham start at around £280 to £300 a month, with established agency packages from about £997. Across the UK, typical SEO spend runs £1,000 to £5,000 a month.
Two things change the real number. Some local prices are published plus VAT, which adds a fifth. And at least one offer gives two months free on a twelve-month contract, which saves money only if you would have stayed the full year anyway.
Published Cheltenham prices, side by side
Several providers here publish a starting price. Here is what is on the record.
| Provider | Published price | What that covers |
|---|---|---|
| Volt Audit | £220 to £635 audit £670 to £1,870/mo | About $295 to $850 and $900 to $2,500. No contract, and you can start with the audit alone |
| Eightysix Digital | From £280/mo | Local SEO and map pack work for Cheltenham. Notably, a New Zealand based agency |
| Outrank | From £300 + VAT/mo | Published packages with local, regional and national options |
| Content Chef | Tiered monthly packages | Cheltenham content-led SEO. States UK agency SEO runs £200 to £9,000 a month |
| Cheltenham SEO | 2 months free on 12-month contract | Works with one company per area, per sector |
| iDigitGroup | From £997/mo | Free initial audit, local and national strategies |
| UK typical range | £1,000 to £5,000/mo | Commonly cited range for UK SEO depending on competition and scope |
Rates as published by each provider and current at the time of writing. Always confirm directly, and ask whether VAT is included. Our own prices are shown in pounds for convenience, converted at roughly £0.75 to the dollar. We invoice in US dollars, so the pound figure moves slightly with the exchange rate.

Two months free is not a discount. It is a trade.
“Two months free when you sign a twelve-month contract” is a perfectly legitimate offer. It is also easy to misread, because it looks like a price cut and is really an exchange.
Take a £500 a month package. Twelve months would be £6,000. With two months free you pay £5,000, which works out at about £417 a month. That is roughly 17 percent off, and if you were going to stay the full year regardless, it is a genuinely good deal.
Now suppose it is not working by month four. On a month-to-month arrangement at the same £500 you could stop, having spent £2,000. On the contract you are committed to the full £5,000.
So the £1,000 you save is paid for with your ability to leave. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on how confident you are, before any work has been done, that the campaign will deliver.
How to decide
- Take the free months if you have already worked with this provider, or have strong evidence they get results in your sector. You were staying anyway, so the discount is free money.
- Keep your exit if this is a first engagement. Paying slightly more per month to be able to stop is cheap insurance while you find out whether the work is any good.
- Either way, read the exit clause. Ask exactly what leaving early costs, and whether the free months come at the start or the end.
Check whether the price has “+ VAT” after it
At least one Cheltenham provider publishes its packages as £300 + VAT. That is transparent, and it is also a reminder to read carefully: for a VAT-registered supplier, £300 plus VAT is £360 on the invoice.
If you are VAT-registered yourself you may be able to reclaim it, which changes the comparison again. Ask every provider, including us, whether a price is inclusive or exclusive of VAT, and compare totals like for like. A VAT-inclusive quote will always look dearer than an ex-VAT one for identical work.
Cheltenham is two economies, and they need different SEO
Most towns of around 118,800 people have one kind of business economy. Cheltenham has two, and they pull SEO in opposite directions.
The cyber town
GCHQ has been based in Cheltenham since the 1950s, and the council is explicit about the ambition: to make the town the cyber capital of the UK. The £1 billion Golden Valley development will add over a million square feet of commercial space for cyber security, AI and related technology firms, about 100 metres from the Doughnut, anchored by a National Cyber Innovation Centre.
For a B2B firm in that ecosystem, SEO looks nothing like local SEO. Search volumes are small, buyers are specialists and procurement teams, trust signals and technical depth matter enormously, and the map pack is close to irrelevant. What wins is authoritative content, clear credentials and the kind of evidence a security-conscious buyer checks before making contact.
The festival town
Then there is the Cheltenham most people know: the most complete Regency town in England, a regional shopping centre, and home to the Cheltenham Festival every March along with literature, jazz, science, music and food festivals across the year.
For hospitality, retail and events businesses, demand is lumpy. Searches spike around festival weeks and fall away between them. The pages that capture festival traffic need to exist, be indexed and be ranking weeks before the crowds arrive, which means building them in the quiet months rather than the busy ones.
The practical point: if a provider offers you a standard package without first asking which of these two Cheltenhams you belong to, they have not thought about your business yet.
What each price tier actually buys
Convert every quote into hours before judging it. One Gloucestershire provider puts it bluntly: an agency quoting £300 a month is not doing meaningful technical work, and one quoting £1,500 might be, or might just be charging a higher margin for the same deliverables. That is the right level of suspicion to bring to every tier.
Entry local SEO
£280 to £600 a monthGoogle Business Profile work, citations, on-page basics and a report. Genuinely useful for a single Cheltenham shop, salon or trade business where the map pack is winnable on fundamentals.
What it cannot contain is sustained content or link building, and it will not move a competitive sector.
Fits: single-location local businesses in quieter categories.
Real local SEO
£600 to £1,500 a monthA proper technical fix list, profile management, review strategy, content written for Cheltenham buyers, dedicated pages for the nearby places you serve such as Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Stroud, and citation cleanup across Yell, Thomson Local, Checkatrade and Gloucestershire directories.
Fits: established local businesses competing across the county.
Competitive and B2B
£1,500 to £3,000 a monthOngoing authoritative content, digital PR and link acquisition, conversion work and optimisation for AI answer engines. Professional services, and anything selling into the cyber and defence supply chain, tends to land here.
Fits: high-value services and B2B technology firms.
National and multi-location
£3,000 to £5,000+ a monthNational campaigns, several locations, or SEO combined with paid search and content production. At this level you are buying a team.
Fits: national brands and multi-site groups based in Cheltenham.
Buy the diagnosis before you sign away a year
Every tier above asks you to start paying monthly, sometimes under a twelve-month contract, before anyone has told you what is actually wrong.
So start at the other end. A flat-fee diagnosis from about £220 tells you what is broken, what it is worth fixing, and roughly what that should cost with anyone. It also tells you how confident to be before accepting any free-months offer. Then choose: do it yourself, hand it to your developer, hire a local provider, or put us on a retainer from about £670 a month with no contract.

What actually drives your number
- Which Cheltenham you are in. B2B cyber and technology work costs more per page than local consumer SEO, because the content has to survive specialist scrutiny.
- Contract terms. Free months, minimum terms and exit clauses change the real cost of a relationship more than the headline rate.
- VAT. Whether a price includes it can shift the total by a fifth.
- Which places you target. Cheltenham plus Gloucester plus Tewkesbury plus Stroud is four sets of local pages and signals, not one.
- The state of your site. Broken links, thin pages and missing structured data mean fixing before growing.
- Links and digital PR. The most expensive line item, and the first dropped from cheap packages.
Where the money leaks
When you should not hire anyone yet
- Your site cannot convert. More visitors multiply a leak. Fix the site first.
- You have not claimed your Google Business Profile. For a Cheltenham shop or service business that free asset often beats the first few months of any retainer.
- You need enquiries within a month. SEO compounds over months. Paid search buys visibility immediately.
- Festival week is next month. Build the pages now for next year rather than expecting this year’s traffic.
Does your SEO provider need to be in Cheltenham?
For the actual work, no. At least one provider marketing SEO to Cheltenham businesses is based in New Zealand, which tells you how little physical location matters to technical and content work.
Proximity is genuinely worth something in two cases: if you want to meet face to face, and for Google Business Profile work involving local reputation and verification.
This holds everywhere, which is why our prices are the same in every city. Outside those two cases, a Cheltenham address does not make a site rank.
So apply the same test to everyone, us included: ask them to show you something you can verify yourself, ask whether the price includes VAT, and ask what leaving early costs.
Common questions
How much does SEO cost in Cheltenham?
Published prices from providers serving Cheltenham start at around £280 to £300 a month, with established agency packages from about £997. Across the UK, typical SEO spend runs £1,000 to £5,000 a month.
Is two months free on a twelve-month contract worth it?
Only if you would have stayed the full year anyway. On a £500 package you save about £1,000, but if it is not working by month four you are still committed to £5,000, where month to month you could have stopped at £2,000.
Do Cheltenham SEO prices include VAT?
Often not. Some providers here publish prices plus VAT, which adds 20 percent for a VAT-registered supplier. Always ask.
Does SEO work differently for cyber and tech firms?
Yes. B2B firms in the GCHQ and Golden Valley ecosystem need authoritative, evidence-led content for specialist buyers, not map pack and review work aimed at local consumers.
Do you price in pounds?
We show pounds for convenience, converted at roughly £0.75 to the dollar, and invoice in US dollars, so the pound figure moves slightly with the exchange rate. If pound invoicing matters, a local provider may suit you better.
What does Volt Audit charge?
