— HVAC Contractors

What SEO costs for an HVAC company, and what a booked job costs everywhere else

We pulled the published rates from HVAC SEO providers and put them side by side. Then we do the comparison that actually matters to a contractor: what one booked job costs through SEO, Local Services Ads, Google Ads and the lead marketplaces. SEO does not win every row, and we will show you where it loses.

Published October 2026 · Based on publicly listed pricing and published 2026 lead-cost benchmarks

The short answer

Published HVAC SEO prices run from a $150 a month AI-driven flat plan to $10,000 or more in competitive metros. Most single-location contractors doing real local SEO pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month, and multi-city operations typically pay $3,500 to $5,500.

But an HVAC owner is rarely choosing between SEO agencies. You are choosing between SEO and renting leads. Against Google Local Services Ads, at roughly $116 per booked job, SEO is a slow, long-term play. Against shared marketplace leads at $300 to $540 per booked job, it pays for itself quickly. The table further down shows both.

— The comparison that matters

What one booked job costs, by channel

Cost per lead is the number most people quote, and it is misleading. A cheap lead that five other contractors also received, and that rarely turns into a job, is not cheap. What matters is cost per booked job. Published 2026 benchmarks put the main HVAC channels here:

ChannelCost per leadCost per booked jobStops when you stop paying?
Google Local Services Ads~$51 (exclusive)~$116 at a 44% book rateYes
Google Ads, non-branded search~$149~$300 to $400Yes
Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack$25 to $100 (shared with 3 to 5 contractors)~$300 to $540Yes
Established organic SEO~$10 to $30Falls as rankings growNo, rankings keep working

Benchmarks from published 2026 HVAC lead-cost studies, listed in Sources below. Your own numbers will differ by market and season.

The honest reading of that table: Local Services Ads are genuinely hard to beat on cost per booked job, and any SEO provider who tells you otherwise is selling. Where SEO wins is the last column. Every paid channel stops the day you stop paying, and paid lead prices are rising: Local Services Ads went from about $50.46 per lead in 2023 to $60.50 in 2024, roughly a 20 percent jump in a year. Organic rankings keep producing calls after the work is done, and their cost per lead keeps falling.

How many booked jobs SEO has to win to pay for itself

Divide the annual SEO fee by the cost per booked job of the channel it would replace. That gives the number of jobs a month SEO must bring in to be the cheaper option.

Monthly SEO feePer yearJobs/month to beat Local Services Ads (~$116)Jobs/month to beat shared leads or Google Ads (~$300 to $540)
$900$10,8007.81.7 to 3.0
$1,500$18,00012.92.8 to 5.0
$2,500$30,00021.64.6 to 8.3

Booked jobs per month needed for the SEO fee to cost less than the same jobs bought through that channel.

What that tells you

  • If you mostly buy shared marketplace leads, even a modest SEO programme only needs three to five booked jobs a month to be cheaper. That is a low bar for an established local contractor.
  • If Local Services Ads already work well for you, SEO is a longer game. It needs a dozen or more booked jobs a month to undercut them on cost, so its real value is reducing your dependence on a channel whose price keeps climbing.
  • Most contractors should run both. Keep Local Services Ads running for calls this month while SEO builds, then shift spend as organic leads grow. Published HVAC benchmarks suggest SEO typically takes six to twelve months to outpace paid search.

What each price tier actually buys

Convert every quote into what it can physically pay for. A real HVAC campaign needs Google Business Profile work, service pages for each job type, location pages for the towns you cover, technical fixes, reviews and links. Several providers put the floor bluntly: below about $1,000 a month you are mostly getting profile maintenance, not SEO.

Budget and automated

$150 to $800 a month

Mostly Google Business Profile upkeep, review requests and templated content, often AI-driven. Can genuinely help a one-truck operation in a quiet town keep its map listing healthy. It will not build the service and location pages that win competitive searches.

Fits: very small contractors in low-competition areas.

Real local SEO

$1,500 to $3,500 a month

Where most residential HVAC companies land. Pages for AC repair, furnace repair, installation, maintenance plans and emergency service, location pages for each town, technical fixes, review strategy and link building.

Fits: single-metro residential contractors.

Multi-city and competitive metros

$3,500 to $10,000 a month

Several service areas or a crowded metro such as Phoenix, Dallas or Atlanta, where emergency keywords are fought over by well-funded competitors and private-equity-backed groups.

Fits: multi-location contractors and dense metros.

Commercial HVAC

$8,000 to $12,000 a month

Selling to facility managers and property owners is a different game: longer sales cycles, technical content and account-based outreach alongside SEO.

Fits: commercial and industrial HVAC firms.

— There is a fifth option

Find out what is broken before you commit to anything

Every tier above asks you to start paying monthly before anyone has told you what is actually wrong. Some agencies add a $500 to $2,000 setup fee and a six to twelve month contract on top.

So start at the other end. A flat-fee diagnosis from $295 tells you what is broken, what it is worth fixing, and whether your money is better spent on SEO or on Local Services Ads right now. Then choose: do it yourself, hand it to your developer, hire an HVAC specialist, or put us on a retainer from $900 a month with no contract.

Two red rows, both real. If you need calls this month, run Local Services Ads, and we would tell you that on the call. If you want a provider who only ever works with HVAC companies, specialists exist. What we offer is no contract, no setup fee, published prices, SEO and the website from one person, and an honest read on whether SEO or ads is the better spend for you right now.

Where the money leaks

Judging leads by cost per leadA $40 shared lead that five contractors also got is not cheaper than a $116 booked job. Compare cost per booked job.
Setup fees and long contractsTraditional HVAC agencies often add a $500 to $2,000 setup fee and a six to twelve month contract. Neither is necessary for the work.
Profile maintenance sold as SEOBelow about $1,000 a month, many packages are Google Business Profile posts and little else. Useful, but not the service and location pages that win competitive searches.

Common questions

How much does SEO cost for an HVAC company?

Published prices run from a $150 a month AI-driven flat plan to $10,000 or more in competitive metros. Most single-location contractors doing real local SEO pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month, and multi-city operations typically pay $3,500 to $5,500.

Is SEO cheaper than Local Services Ads?

Not at first. Local Services Ads average about $51 per lead at a 44 percent book rate, roughly $116 per booked job. SEO wins over time because organic leads keep arriving without a per-lead charge, while paid lead prices keep rising.

Are Angi and HomeAdvisor leads worth it?

They look cheap at $25 to $100, but they are shared with three to five contractors and close at low rates, so the real cost per booked job often lands between $300 and $540.

How many jobs does SEO need to win to pay for itself?

At $1,500 a month, roughly 13 booked jobs a month to undercut Local Services Ads, but only about 3 to 5 a month to undercut shared marketplace leads.

Should I stop buying leads and switch to SEO?

Usually not straight away. Keep Local Services Ads running for calls now while SEO builds, then shift spend as organic leads grow. SEO typically takes six to twelve months to outpace paid search.

What does Volt Audit charge?

The checker is free. A full audit is $295, $475 or $850 depending on site size. Retainers are $900, $1,500 or $2,500 a month with no contract and no setup fee. A WordPress rebuild starts at $1,700.
