What SEO costs in Reading, and why London prices keep turning up
We pulled the published rates from SEO providers serving Reading and the Thames Valley and put them side by side, in pounds. Then we look at the two things that quietly change the real number: London pricing leaking down the M4, and VAT.
Published September 2026 · Based on publicly listed pricing from providers serving Reading, Berkshire and the Thames Valley
The short answer
Published prices for Reading run from about £99 a month for entry packages to £3,000 or more. Local Reading agencies typically charge £500 to £1,800 a month.
London agencies pitching Thames Valley businesses commonly quote £1,500 to £3,000 for comparable work. Reading is 25 minutes from Paddington, so those quotes arrive more often than you might expect.
And check the small print: many UK agencies quote excluding VAT. For a VAT-registered supplier, a £750 quote is £900 on the invoice.
Published Reading and Thames Valley prices, side by side
Plenty of local providers publish a starting price. Here is what is on the record, which gives you a real floor and ceiling instead of a discovery call.
| Provider | Published price | What that covers |
|---|---|---|
| Volt Audit | £220 to £635 audit £670 to £1,870/mo | About $295 to $850 and $900 to $2,500. Audit priced by site size, no contract, and you can start with the audit alone |
| SEO Reading (seo-reading.co.uk) | From £99/mo | Entry-level packages for local Reading businesses |
| The Search Equation | £100 to £500/mo | Flexible packages, you choose how much time is allocated each month |
| Intertec | From £350/mo | Established provider, 20+ years, covers Reading and the wider region |
| Reading agencies, typical | £500 to £1,800/mo | Reported typical range for local Reading SEO agencies |
| Digity | £750 to £3,000+/mo | Bracknell, Wokingham and Reading. Tailored scope, GEO and AI search focus |
| London agencies | £1,500 to £3,000/mo | Reported range when London firms pitch Thames Valley clients |
Rates as published by each provider and current at the time of writing. Always confirm directly, and ask whether VAT is included. Our own prices are shown in pounds for convenience, converted at roughly £0.75 to the dollar. We invoice in US dollars, so the pound figure moves slightly with the exchange rate.

Reading is close enough to London to get London prices
Reading sits 25 minutes from Paddington, and the Elizabeth line has only tightened the link. That is good for commuters. It also means London agencies treat the Thames Valley as their back garden, and pitch Reading businesses at London rates.
The gap is not small. Local Reading agencies typically charge £500 to £1,800 a month. London agencies pitching the same businesses commonly quote £1,500 to £3,000.
This is not us inferring a problem. Several separate Reading-based providers say it openly: that London firms apply London rates to Thames Valley clients and frequently hand smaller Reading accounts to junior staff. When three competitors independently describe the same pattern, it is worth taking seriously.
Before you accept a London quote
- Ask who actually does the work. The senior person in the pitch meeting is not always the person on your account six weeks later.
- Ask what London overhead you are funding. Central London office space is some of the most expensive in the world, and it sits inside the retainer.
- Ask whether they know Reading. Caversham, Tilehurst, Woodley, Green Park and Thames Valley Park behave differently in search. A London agency may treat them as one postcode.
Compare the invoice, not the headline
Many UK agencies quote excluding VAT. For a VAT-registered supplier that adds 20 percent, so the number you were quoted is not the number you pay.
A £750 quote becomes £900. A £1,500 quote becomes £1,800. If you are VAT-registered yourself you may be able to reclaim it, which changes the picture again, so the fair comparison depends on your own situation.
The simple rule: ask every provider whether their price is inclusive or exclusive of VAT, including us, and compare the totals on a like-for-like basis. Most confusion in UK SEO quotes comes from comparing a VAT-inclusive number against a VAT-exclusive one.
Google has to decide which Reading you mean
Here is something we found while researching this page. Search for SEO pricing in Reading and a large share of the results are about Reading, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is not unusual: Christchurch in New Zealand shares its name with a town in England, which we cover in our Christchurch guide.
That has a practical consequence for your website. Google has to work out which Reading a searcher means, and if your site does not tell it clearly, you can lose relevance to a town on the other side of the Atlantic.
The fix is cheap and most Reading businesses skip it:
- Say Berkshire. In your page titles, your footer and your contact page, not just Reading.
- Use your RG postcode everywhere, consistently, including in your Google Business Profile and directory listings.
- Name real local places such as the Thames Valley, Caversham or Green Park, which only exist in one of the two Readings.
- Add LocalBusiness schema with a full UK address and country code, so the signal is machine-readable rather than implied.
Why Reading is a harder market than its size suggests
Reading is home to around 174,000 people and roughly 7,000 registered businesses, and it has one of the highest levels of economic output per head in the UK. The UK offices of Microsoft, Oracle, PepsiCo and Cisco sit here, alongside the technology clusters at Green Park and Thames Valley Park, legal practices around Forbury Square and a retail core around The Oracle and Broad Street.
That density has two effects. Local search is crowded, because a lot of well-funded firms want the same visibility. And the buyers are demanding, because a professional workforce reads properly before choosing a supplier. Thin, generic service pages that might survive in a quieter market town struggle here.
What each price tier actually buys
Convert every quote into hours before you judge it. A real campaign takes a skilled person roughly 15 to 25 hours a month. Anything priced as if it were two or three hours is either much narrower than it sounds, or not being done.
Entry packages
£99 to £500 a monthTime-boxed work: a handful of fixes, some Google Business Profile upkeep, basic reporting. At the honest end you choose how many hours you are buying, which is transparent and genuinely useful for a sole trader in Tilehurst or a small firm in Woodley.
What it cannot contain is sustained content or link building. Know which you are buying.
Fits: sole traders and very small local businesses.
Real local SEO
£500 to £1,800 a monthA proper technical fix list, Google Business Profile management, review strategy, content written for Reading buyers, and citation cleanup across Yell, Thomson Local, Checkatrade and the Berkshire directories.
This is where most local Reading agencies price, and where most single-location businesses belong.
Fits: one location, competing across Reading and nearby towns.
Competitive sectors
£1,800 to £3,000 a monthOngoing original content, digital PR and link acquisition, conversion work and optimisation for AI answer engines. Legal practices, accountancy, IT services and anything selling into the Thames Valley technology base tend to land here.
Fits: high-value services where one client repays several months of fees.
London agency and regional programmes
£3,000+ a monthMulti-location, Thames Valley-wide or national campaigns, often from London firms with larger teams. Justified for complex, multi-site or national businesses. Hard to justify for a single Reading office.
Fits: multi-site groups, regional and national brands.
Buy the diagnosis before you commit to anyone
Every tier above asks you to start paying monthly before anyone has told you what is actually wrong with your site.
So start at the other end. A flat-fee diagnosis from about £220 tells you what is broken, what it is worth fixing, and roughly what that should cost with anyone. Then choose: do it yourself, hand it to your developer, hire one of the good Reading independents, or put us on a retainer from about £670 a month with no contract. The plan is yours regardless.
Volt Audit next to the alternatives
Reading has genuinely strong independent SEO consultants, so this is an honest table. Three rows do not favour us.
| Volt Audit | London agency | Reading independent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | About £670 to £1,870/mo, or a £220 to £635 audit with no retainer | £1,500 to £3,000/mo | Thames Valley rates |
| Contract | None. Month to month, cancel whenever | Often 6 to 12 months | Varies, often flexible |
| Who does the work | The person you talk to | Often junior on smaller accounts | The consultant |
| London overhead in your fee | No | Yes | No |
| Published local case results | Not yet, we are newer | Varies | Yes, some publish real numbers |
| Face-to-face in Reading | No, we are remote | Sometimes | Yes |
| Priced in pounds | Invoiced in US dollars | Yes | Yes |
| Test before you talk to anyone | Free public tool, no call, no email | Discovery call | Free audit on request |
Read the red rows properly. Reading has independent consultants who work face to face, price in pounds and publish real local case results. If those three things matter most to you, hire one of them, and we mean that. What we offer is a different shape: a free public tool you can run right now without speaking to anybody, published prices with no call, SEO and WordPress development from one person, and a diagnosis you can buy on its own and take anywhere.

What actually drives your number
- Where your agency is based. The Reading-specific one. A London address can nearly double a quote for comparable work.
- VAT. Whether the price includes it can shift the real cost by a fifth.
- Your sector. Legal, accountancy and IT services in the Thames Valley compete against well-funded firms.
- Which towns you target. Reading plus Wokingham plus Bracknell plus Maidenhead is four sets of local signals, not one.
- The state of your site. Broken links, thin pages and missing structured data mean fixing before growing.
- Links and digital PR. The most expensive line item, and the first thing dropped from cheap packages.
Where the money leaks
When you should not hire anyone yet
- Your site cannot convert. More visitors multiply a leak. Fix the site first.
- You have not claimed your Google Business Profile. For a Reading business that free asset often beats the first few months of any retainer.
- You need enquiries within a month. SEO compounds over three to six months. Paid search buys visibility immediately.
- Your budget is under about £300 a month. Either buy a time-boxed local package or a one-off audit, rather than a thin retainer.
Does your SEO provider need to be in Reading?
For the actual work, no. Technical SEO, content and site architecture do not depend on where the person doing them sits, and London agencies serve the Thames Valley daily.
Proximity is genuinely worth something in two cases: if you want to meet face to face, and for Google Business Profile work involving local verification and reputation. Reading has capable local independents for exactly that.
This holds everywhere, which is why our prices are the same in every city. Outside those two cases, a Reading or London address does not make a site rank.
So apply the same test to everyone, us included: ask them to show you something you can verify yourself, and ask whether the price includes VAT. A live page, a real ranking, a tool you can run on your own site right now.
Common questions
How much does SEO cost in Reading, Berkshire?
Published prices run from about £99 a month for entry packages to £3,000 or more. Local Reading agencies typically charge £500 to £1,800 a month, while London agencies pitching Thames Valley clients commonly quote £1,500 to £3,000.
Do UK SEO prices include VAT?
Often not. Many UK agencies quote excluding VAT, which adds 20 percent for a VAT-registered supplier. Always ask, and compare totals like for like.
Why do London agencies charge more?
London overhead, and the fact that Reading is close enough to pitch at London rates. Several Reading-based providers note that London firms often hand smaller Reading accounts to junior staff.
Why should my site mention Berkshire?
Because Reading is also a city in Pennsylvania. Clear Berkshire, Thames Valley and RG postcode signals help Google place your business in the right country.
Do you price in pounds?
We show pounds for convenience, converted at roughly £0.75 to the dollar, and invoice in US dollars, so the pound figure moves slightly with the exchange rate. If pound invoicing matters to you, a local independent may suit you better.
What does Volt Audit charge?
The checker is free. A full audit is about £220, £355 or £635 depending on site size ($295, $475 or $850). Retainers are about £670, £1,120 or £1,870 a month ($900, $1,500 or $2,500) with no contract. A WordPress rebuild starts at about £1,270 ($1,700).
