What SEO costs in Canberra, and why government buyers check you rather than find you
We gathered published SEO pricing relevant to Canberra businesses and put it side by side in Australian dollars. Then we look at what makes Canberra different from every other Australian city: a market shaped by government, where for many businesses the most important search is not the one that finds you, but the one an evaluator runs to check you.
Published October 2026 · Based on publicly listed Australian SEO pricing and official procurement rules
The short answer
Published Australian SEO pricing runs from about $500 a month for small local programs to $10,000 or more for national campaigns, usually plus GST. Most Canberra small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month, with single-area local campaigns from around $800.
But if you sell to government, the price matters less than the target. Agencies buy through tenders and panels published on AusTender, not through Google. What SEO can do is make sure that when an evaluator searches your name, they find a business that looks like the one your bid describes.
Published Australian SEO prices, side by side
Few Canberra-based providers publish their prices, so this table uses Australian providers and guides that publish pricing nationally or for Canberra specifically. All figures in Australian dollars, as published.

| Canberra cost guide | $800 to $8,000/mo | $800 to $1,500 local, $1,500 to $3,500 most small businesses, $4,000 to $8,000 competitive |
Rates as published by each source and current at the time of writing. Always confirm directly and ask whether GST is included. Our prices are converted at roughly A$1.40 to the US dollar; we invoice in US dollars, so the Australian figure moves with the exchange rate.
One note on that cost guide: like its Gold Coast equivalent, its own agency page explains that enquiries from the guide are routed to a single paying agency. We explain why that matters in our Gold Coast guide.
Government buyers check you. They rarely find you.
In most cities, SEO is about being found by a customer who does not know you yet. For a large share of Canberra businesses, the consultancies, IT firms, defence suppliers and professional services that sell to the Commonwealth, the buying process works differently.
Under the Commonwealth Procurement Rules, agencies must publish open tenders on AusTender, and many purchases run through standing offer panels of pre-qualified suppliers. Nobody wins a tender by ranking first for “IT consultant Canberra”.
Where search does matter is the moment after your name lands on an evaluator’s desk. They search you. What they find either supports the bid you submitted or quietly undermines it.
What that means for your site
- Own your name. The first page of results for your business name should show your capability statement, case studies, team credentials and any panels you sit on, not an old directory listing or a thin homepage.
- Write capability pages, not sales pages. Evaluators are checking claims. Specific, evidenced pages about what you have delivered, for whom and to what standard, do more than a slogan.
- Match the buyer’s language. If your bids say “cyber security uplift” and your site says “IT solutions”, the evaluator notices the gap.
AusTender tells you what agencies actually buy
Commonwealth agencies must report every contract of $10,000 or more on AusTender within 42 days, along with standing offers. Those contract notices are public.
That makes them some of the best keyword research available to a Canberra business. They show which agencies buy what you sell, how much they spend, and the exact words they use to describe it. Build your capability pages in that language and you are writing for the people who actually sign the contracts.
No SEO tool gives you that, and it costs nothing.
Why Canberra is a different market
The ACT has the highest median household income in Australia: $2,364 a week at the 2021 Census, about a third above the national median of $1,770. The Australian Bureau of Statistics itself links that to the territory’s high level of public service employment.
That produces two markets in one city. Alongside the businesses selling to government, there is an affluent, highly educated population buying local services: trades, health, legal, property and education. For them, ordinary local SEO applies, and the Google Business Profile and map pack matter as much here as anywhere. The difference is the buyer. Canberra customers tend to research properly before they call, so thin pages and vague claims cost you more here than in most cities.
What each price tier actually buys
Convert every quote into monthly hours including GST before you judge it. Australian agencies commonly charge $140 to $250 an hour, so a $500 program buys a few hours of work, not a campaign.
Entry programs
$500 to $1,000 a monthGoogle Business Profile upkeep, citations, a few on-page fixes and a report. Reasonable for a tradie or clinic serving a handful of Canberra suburbs.
Fits: small local businesses.
Real local SEO
$1,500 to $3,500 a monthTechnical fixes, profile management, review strategy, service pages and content written for well-informed Canberra buyers.
Fits: established local businesses competing across the city.
Credibility and B2G
$2,500 to $5,000 a monthCapability pages, case studies, content in the language agencies actually use, digital PR and a branded search presence that holds up when an evaluator checks you.
Fits: consultancies and suppliers selling to government.
National and competitive
$5,000 to $10,000+ a monthNational campaigns, multiple locations, or sectors where well-funded competitors set the pace. At this level you are buying a team.
Fits: national brands and multi-site groups.
Buy the diagnosis before you buy a monthly program
Every tier above asks you to start paying monthly before anyone has told you what is actually wrong, or whether your problem is ranking at all. For a government supplier, the answer is often that your site simply does not support your bids.
So start at the other end. A flat-fee diagnosis from about A$415 (US$295) tells you what is broken, what an evaluator sees when they search your name, and what it is worth fixing. The report is yours to keep. Then choose: do it yourself, hand it to your developer, hire a local provider, or put us on a retainer.

What we offer is a diagnosis you can buy on its own, no contract, a free public tool, and SEO and the WordPress build from one person.

What actually drives your number
- Who your buyer is. The Canberra-specific one. A government supplier needs credibility and capability pages; a local service needs map pack and reviews.
- Your sector. Legal, health, property and professional services compete against well-funded rivals.
- GST. Most quotes are plus 10 percent GST. Compare like with like.
- The state of your site. Broken links, thin pages and missing structured data mean fixing before growing.
- Links and digital PR. The most expensive line item, and the first dropped from cheap programs.
Where the money leaks
When you should not hire anyone yet
- Your site cannot convert. More visitors multiply a leak. Fix the site first.
- You win all your work through panels. If every contract arrives through a panel you already sit on, spend on capability content and credibility, not on rankings.
- You have not claimed your Google Business Profile. For a local Canberra business that free asset often beats the first few months of any program.
- You need enquiries within a month. SEO compounds over months. Paid search buys visibility immediately.
Does your SEO provider need to be in Canberra?
For the actual work, no. Technical SEO, content and site architecture do not depend on where the person doing them sits. Proximity matters if you want to meet in person, and some government work may require a provider who already sits on a relevant panel.
Outside those cases, our prices are the same in every city, from the Gold Coast and Christchurch to Reading in the UK. So apply the same test to everyone, us included: ask whether the price includes GST, and ask them to show you something you can verify yourself.
Common questions
How much does SEO cost in Canberra?
Published Australian SEO pricing runs from about $500 a month for small local programs to $10,000 or more for national campaigns, usually plus GST. Most Canberra small businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month, with single-area local campaigns from around $800.
Does SEO help win government contracts?
Not directly. Agencies publish open tenders on AusTender and buy through tenders and panels. SEO matters when evaluators check you: what they find when they search your name, and whether your site supports your bid.

Agencies must report contracts of $10,000 or more within 42 days. Those public notices show which agencies buy what you sell, at what value and in what words, which is free research for your pages.
Is Canberra SEO more expensive than other cities?
Not much. Canberra has the highest median household income in Australia, but SEO pricing is set more by competition and scope than by city. Most quotes sit within the same national bands.
Do Canberra SEO prices include GST?
Usually not. Most are quoted plus 10 percent GST. Always ask.
